Producing distinctly Australian horror to terrify the world

Welcome to the sun-drenched nightmare that is Australia. A land of breathtaking contradictions.

We are world-renowned for our shimmering coastlines and the soul-stirring expanse of the outback, landscapes that invite you to lose yourself in their majesty. But as every Australian knows, the line between paradise and peril is as thin as a Bunnings sausage.

In the Great Southern Land, sheer beauty and fatal threats don’t just coexist; they are inextricably linked. For every postcard-perfect beach and awe-inspiring outback vista, there is a lethal truth waiting just beneath the surface.. A duality found nowhere else on Earth.

At Rural Legends, we bridge the gap between our world-famous landscapes and the nightmares that inhabit them. We bring to life the horrors Australians know all too intimately. We explore the prehistoric terrors hidden deep underground and the predatory killers that hunt in plain sight under the midday sun. Our stories delve into the ancient creatures thriving within the depth of the bush and the chilling reality of fatal dangers lurking within the walls of our own homes.

Welcome to Rural Legends. Don’t let the view distract you.

From our red dust to the global screen, Rural Legends crafts a brand of uniquely Australian horror for the world stage, one haunting legend at a time.

OUR GOAL

To create Aussie horror movies that are so scary you’ll shat your dacks.

But we want to do more than that.

Our hope is to encourage different people from all across Australia to come together and tell their own stories while also educating young dreamers of the opportunities available to them to participate in the Australian film industry that help support those stories.

It takes many hands to help craft a movie.

Our ambition is to foster an inclusive culture that brings together anyone who wants to tell their story and teaches them to work collaboratively to that story… and help scare the shit out of the world in doing so.

Mitch Hawkins: Screenwriter & Founder of Rural Legends

Mitch Hawkins is a creative screenwriter and the driving force behind Rural Legends, an Australian production studio dedicated to producing stories that prove our local horror is as diverse, terrifying, and world-class as the land that inspires it.

With 25 years at the forefront of the creative digital space, Mitch is turning his decades of design and storytelling expertise toward his lifelong passion: telling scary stories.

Mitch’s work is fueled by a deep pride in Australia’s unique cinematic identity. He is committed to exploring the vast, atmospheric potential of the Australian landscape, crafting narratives that blur the lines between the grounded and the supernatural.

So whether it’s the unsettling reality of the outback or the relentless march of a serial killer, Mitch’s vision for Rural Legends is to showcase a distinctly Australian brand of horror, horror stories that can ONLY happen in our great southern land.

Backpackers travelling across the isolated Australian Outback quickly discover that there are even more dangers to be afraid of Down Under than just those they were warned about.

As a catastrophic bushfire rages across the Australian wilderness, a desperate group of people trapped in its path must band together upon realising the flames are not their only threat, but the very force that has awakened a terrifying, unseen evil.

A plant-based zombie movie.

A vampire living in a rural Queensland silver mining town has his quiet retirement disrupted when another less conspicuous vampire arrives to paint the town red.

The sole survivor of the axe wielding serial killer known as the LightHouse Killer (LHK) inadvertently stumbles onto a conspiracy so deep that it brings the killer back from the dead to ensure the secrets stay buried.

When a young couple moves to a rural Australian town to renovate their first home they quickly discover that their new house may have more secrets lurking within it’s walls than just the good bones.
